Nació en Omaha, Nebraska (Estados Unidos)
el 8 de febrero de 1941. Nolte no se planteó ser actor hasta que
llegó a la Universidad; se interesó por el teatro tras una
breve carrera como atleta que tuvo que dejar por una lesión. En
1962 se inició un periodo de catorce años de trabajos teatrales
regionales, hasta llegar finalmente a Nueva York.

Consiguió la popularidad en 1976 por su trabajo en la serie televisiva "Hombre rico, hombre pobre". Gracias a ella, un año después debutó en el cine con "Abismo".
Ha sido nominado al Oscar como Mejor Actor por "El
príncipe de las mareas" y por "Affliction".
